# Three Borrowed Rooms

## Sequence 1: Four households

An elevated metal walkway runs beside terracotta homes with weathered teal doors. Different pairs of shoes stand outside. Large ribbed ceramic foundations rest above the tidal flats. Ivo and Tamsin walk along the terrace. Tamsin arranges four illustrated household sheets and a clipboard on a teal table. Edda holds her old saucepan and looks at the inspector.

Caption: "FIVE HOURS TO LIFT."

Tamsin: "Everything added since the last certificate."

Edda: "People too?"

## Sequence 2: The record

Tamsin answers Edda across the table. Mara lays a worn notebook on the household papers. Tamsin examines a stained drawing of four linked foundations, then looks towards the houses; Mara watches from behind her.

Tamsin: "People first. Their names stay off the public sheet."

Mara: "She kept a record."

Tamsin: "Then we'll see what changed."

## Sequence 3: Start with mine

Ivo takes a household sheet from Tamsin, looking guarded. Mara moves the remaining papers towards Edda and asks to begin. Edda turns towards her open kitchen door with the saucepan, looking back over her shoulder.

Ivo: "Mine hasn't."

Mara: "Can we start with yours?"

Edda: "You can start by wiping your boots."

Inside Edda's kitchen are repaired pans, tools and wooden chairs. A white cylindrical kiln stands on a low plinth beside the workbench. Mara: "You made these?"

Edda: "The handles. The pans outlive everyone."

Edda opens the kiln's front hatch. Small bowls and handles sit on its shelves. She examines a flaw in an unfired bowl, running her thumb across it. She sets it on the workbench and turns to Mara. Mara writes in a notebook. The kiln stays where it is, with its hatch open.

Edda: "One last firing was the plan."

Edda: "We can move it. Not into somebody else's spare room."

Mara: "A shore store. I'll ask for a trolley."

## Sequence 7: Number Eleven

Anik, a young adult with a shaved head and a green knitted vest, holds the edge of Number Eleven's teal door. Tamsin shows a household form with a foundation diagram and a total field. Mara stands back from the threshold, leaving Anik room to decide whether to admit them.

Anik: "Does the owner see this?"

Tamsin: "The load total. Not your belongings."

Mara: "You can show us what matters."

## Sequence 8: Enough for the day

Anik shows Mara two beds separated by a curtain. Someone sleeps beneath the covers of the farther bed, their face unseen. Two toothbrushes stand in an enamel container beside a basin. Mara answers quietly. Anik then points out a rectangular water tank beneath the basin bench, with a pipe and tap connected to it.

Anik: "My sister came in winter."

Anik: "She works nights. She's asleep."

Mara: "We don't need to wake her."

Anik: "The mains only reaches us before dawn. We keep enough for the day."

## Sequence 9: The water they need

Mara compares a tank drawing in the notebook with the actual tank. Anik folds their arms, hurt and angry. Tamsin draws a tank on her clipboard. Mara looks up at the inspector; Anik listens beside her.

Mara: "The certificate assumes this is empty at lift."

Anik: "Then the certificate should try living here."

Tamsin: "We assess it with the water you need."

## Sequence 10: The workshop

Ivo takes Mara into his workshop. A small lathe is bolted to the workbench. A closed service hatch lies in the floor. At a separate table beside the window, Neri sketches a bird. Ivo lays an old certificate flat. Mara notices bright bolts beside empty, rust-stained mounting holes in the lathe's wooden bench.

Ivo: "Same bench. Same tools."

Mara: "You moved this."

## Sequence 11: It always did

Ivo raises a hand as he answers. Neri looks up from the bird drawing. Ivo turns to respond, while Mara watches. Neri remains seated, pencil poised against the paper, visibly doubtful.

Ivo: "To get at the drain."

Neri: "That's why the table slopes now?"

Ivo: "It always did."

## Sequence 12: Out of level

A close view of the spirit level shows its bubble well to the right of the calibration marks. Mara questions Ivo, who stands beside the closed floor hatch. Tamsin sets an inspection case beside it. Neri stays at the separate writing table, away from the machine.

Mara: "Is the floor new too?"

Tamsin: "We'll look from the bay. Nobody moves the machine."

## Sequence 13: The patch

Tamsin clips a lamp to the rail in a dry service bay. Mara and Edda are initially visible above the ladder. Mara and Ivo then stand on the metal walkway inside, facing a rough grey patch on the curved ceramic wall beneath a steel support. Tamsin waits near the entrance. Mara directs lamplight across the patch's raised edge. Ivo looks away.

Mara: "When was this patched?"

Ivo: "Last season."

## Sequence 14: The first repair

Mara faces Ivo with the lamp held low. A close view shows one of his hands clenched and the other spread against his trousers. Mara asks another question. Ivo looks towards the patched wall, his expression troubled.

Mara: "Who inspected it?"

Ivo: "Sela saw it."

Mara: "Did she see this patch?"

Ivo: "She saw the first one."

## Sequence 15: Beyond the repair

Tamsin raises the work lamp. A thin crack crosses the patch and continues into the original ceramic beneath the metal support. She holds a marker beside it. Mara studies the relationship between the support, the wall and the crack. Tamsin ties a plain red tag to the service railing as Mara and Ivo leave the inspection area.

Tamsin: "This goes past the repair."

Mara: "This isn't just extra weight."

Tamsin: "We can't certify this chamber from a load reading."

## Sequence 16: Somewhere safe

Outside, Edda brings mismatched cups on a tray. Mara holds one while Neri asks about moving. Ivo looks towards Tamsin before replying. Tamsin addresses the group with a diagram of four linked foundations. Mara listens across the table.

Neri: "Are we moving?"

Ivo: "We don't know yet."

Tamsin: "We plan somewhere safe for everyone. That includes you, Mara."

## Sequence 17: Every repair

Mara offers to help. Edda slides a cup towards Ivo, who looks down. Mara opens the worn load book and points to a crossed-out foundation drawing while Ivo listens. The final view is from inside the empty workshop: a pencil rests diagonally on an old certificate beside a bird sketch. Through the window, the adults sit together around their papers. The lathe remains at its separate bench.

Mara: "I'll help make the list."

Edda: "Put my kiln on the trolley list."

Mara: "Show me every repair. Even the ones that held."
