An Address That Holds

The Houses We Carry, episode 15. 15 vertical sequences, 60 panels.

Sequence 1: Three days later

Three days later, five houses float above the brine, with the workshop mooring empty. Mara checks the watch book; harbour crew inspect bank equipment. Anja opens the shutters of her upper room.

Sequence 2: A limited licence

Tamsin lays out the shared lift licence and its maintenance duties at the common table. Oren reads the household agreement beside his room key. Changes still require agreement and assessment.

Tamsin: "A limited shared licence. For these five foundations."

Tamsin: "These duties are part of it."

Oren: "And a change still comes back to all of us."

Tamsin: "With a fresh assessment where it is needed."

Sequence 3: The bill that remains

Ivo and Mara examine the workshop and lathe loss record. The harbour has acknowledged the claim but has not paid it. Mara records available funds separately.

Ivo: "The claim is still being assessed."

Mara: "They have acknowledged receipt, not payment."

Ivo: "Then we cannot spend it yet."

Sequence 4: The shared costs

Edda, Mara, Oren and Anja review inspection, maintenance and loan costs. Anja holds her room agreement. The posted contributions board names Mara, Ivo, Edda, Oren and Anja.

Edda: "The kiln is still in the upper store."

Anja: "And my contribution starts with what we agreed."

Oren: "No hidden share for anyone."

Sequence 5: The job on the page

The households discuss a paid seasonal engineer role, with specified hours and relief cover.

Ivo: "We need an engineer for the season."

Mara: "A paid job. With hours and relief."

Edda: "That is what we are offering."

Sequence 6: One season

Mara considers the seasonal contract and the money available to pay for it. She agrees to one season and keeps her own copy alongside the shared record.

Mara: "One season."

Oren: "Then we review it together."

Mara: "Together."

Sequence 7: The book her mother left

Mara keeps Sela’s original load book, placing the corrections beside it rather than erasing the earlier work.

Mara: "I am keeping the book."

Edda: "All of it?"

Mara: "Especially the pages we had to correct."

Sequence 8: A bench for now

At the harbour store, Ivo is offered a temporary shared bench and a paid job. His lost workshop and lathe have not been replaced.

Storeskeeper: "Your slot ends before the afternoon crew."

Ivo: "I will leave it clear."

Sequence 9: The record Neri keeps

Neri records birds from a safe position. Their observations remain observations, not a forecast of the water.

Ivo: "The watch copied your observation."

Neri: "It is an observation. Not a new forecast."

Ivo: "They wrote that too."

Sequence 10: What trust looks like today

Ivo and Neri examine the maintenance log. Ivo commits to recording problems and telling both the watch and Neri.

Neri: "If something is wrong again?"

Ivo: "It goes here. And I tell the watch."

Neri: "And me."

Ivo: "And you."

Sequence 11: A room in use

Anja sews a paid repair at the table in her upper room, beside her sewing kit and framed house photograph. Mara asks whether the scheduled room check is convenient and waits outside when Anja asks for a minute.

Mara: "Is this still a good time?"

Anja: "Give me one minute."

Sequence 12: Oren’s door

Oren hangs his scarf in his modest room at Edda’s house. Edda offers tea at the common table. He takes his own key and closes the door behind him.

Edda: "Tea at the common table?"

Oren: "I will come down."

Sequence 13: The empty place

Mara and Ivo look across the empty workshop mooring from the safe rail. Mara holds the maintenance plan. They acknowledge both the next repair and the long work still ahead.

Mara: "We have a plan for the next repair."

Ivo: "And a long way after that."

Mara: "Yes."

Sequence 14: An address that holds

Anja joins Edda, Oren, Neri, Mara and Ivo at the common table. Edda offers tea; Anja accepts. Mara settles beside her bag and seasonal contract.

Edda: "Tea?"

Anja: "Yes, please."

Sequence 15: The next watch

Six cups, the blue bowl, Neri’s bird notebook and the shared book sit at the table. Mara writes in the roster. The window overlooks the empty workshop mooring. In the final wide view, five houses float on five white caissons and the lost workshop’s gap remains.

End of episode 15.
