Sequence 1: A second column

Mara draws two columns at the kitchen table while Edda and Ivo watch. The suspended test result hangs behind them. Edda indicates the second column. Ivo sets a spanner on the sheet while Tamsin looks on. Tamsin then holds up the failed wave trace and a brown load-list book. The sheet headings read 'What leaves' and 'What it costs'.

Mara: "What leaves. What it costs."

Edda: "Keep room in that one."

Tamsin: "Less weight is not the whole repair."

Sequence 2: Already offered

Edda stands beside her cold domed brick kiln, with Mara in the doorway. Mara looks at repaired pots and bowls on the worktable. Edda opens the dark kiln chamber and takes out a small mottled blue bowl with an ochre rim.

Edda: "I said the kiln could go."

They unload the bricks into manageable stacks inside the dry upper store. Back in Edda's kitchen, she stands in the doorway holding the blue bowl in its cloth. Sequence 11: A sale with a receipt

Sequence 12: The difference

Mara sits at the table with the household list, her essential shoulder bag on her chair and the chipped yellow cup beside her. Her travel case is gone. Ivo pauses at the workshop door with his hand on the handle, looking towards the service stair. Outside, warm windows overlook protected walkways and huge white ceramic caissons above exposed tidal flats. An empty handcart rests beside a wall.
