The Quiet Valve
The Houses We Carry, episode 9. 15 vertical sequences, 60 panels.
Sequence 1: The exercise
In a lit dry service bay, Tamsin, Mara and Ivo gather beside teal pipework. A brass round handwheel and a separate red straight lever are visible. Neri watches from a higher guarded landing with their bird notebook. Huge white house caissons stand above low water beyond the bay. Mara reads a maintenance checklist while Ivo checks the walkway. A sign reads 'KEEP WALKWAYS CLEAR'. Neri offers to write the results; Mara looks up to answer them.
Tamsin: "An exercise. No lift."
Mara: "One control at a time."
Neri: "I can write the results."
Mara: "From there. Thank you."
Sequence 2: A dry hook
Mara takes off her ochre jacket, revealing a charcoal shirt, while Ivo waits beside the controls. She hangs the jacket on a high dry wall hook above her slate-blue shoulder bag. Neri remains behind the upper rail. Mara holds the checklist beside Tamsin and reads the shared-isolation entry. Ivo holds an open hand above the separate brass round handwheel to identify his workshop control.
Mara: "The shared isolation is clear."
Ivo: "This is the workshop control."
Sequence 3: Before the turn
Ivo rests a hand on the stationary brass wheel beside a faded service drawing. He withdraws both hands before operating it and asks the others to wait. Mara wears her plain charcoal shirt and Tamsin stands beside her. Ivo admits that he already knew the control caught. Mara turns to him, with Neri watching from the upper landing.
Ivo: "Wait."
Ivo: "I knew it caught."
Mara: "Since when?"
Sequence 4: The answer
Ivo faces Mara and Tamsin across the untouched controls. He says he knew about the fault before Mara arrived. Mara folds her arms and asks about the service record. Ivo admits that he left the entry clear, with the old record visible behind him. Neri grips their bird notebook against their chest above the landing rail, listening without speaking.
Ivo: "Before you came."
Mara: "And the service record?"
Ivo: "I left it clear."
Sequence 5: What he feared
Ivo looks towards his workshop on the floor above the service bay. Its large worn lathe remains in place. Mara looks up towards the same room. Neri watches from the guarded landing with their binoculars. Ivo folds his hands above the untouched control as he explains the work he feared losing. Tamsin holds the old service card beside her new notes while Mara reads over her shoulder.
Ivo: "I thought they would ground the house."
Mara: "They still might."
Ivo: "I needed another week of work."
Tamsin: "The record needs that answer too."
Sequence 6: The quiet stop
Ivo gently exercises the brass wheel from the dry platform while Mara and Tamsin watch behind a rail. Neri remains farther back on the upper landing. A close view shows the wheel stopping beneath Ivo's hands. He releases it immediately as Mara raises an open hand. Tamsin writes the failed exercise result on the checklist. The pipework remains intact, with no leak or burst.
Mara: "Stop there."
Tamsin: "It does not complete its travel."
Sequence 7: A separate fault
Mara lays two separate records on the dry bench: the old caisson drawing with its crack marked in red, and the new valve service sheet. Her ochre jacket remains on the wall hook. Ivo stands beside her and accepts responsibility. Tamsin records both the fault and the missing service entry. Mara closes the older drawing and leaves the valve report open. Neri watches from the upper landing throughout.
Mara: "This is not the caisson crack."
Ivo: "No. It is mine."
Tamsin: "The fault, and the missing record."
Sequence 8: The boundary
Mara faces Ivo across the controls and states that his house must stay isolated. Tamsin listens nearby. Ivo looks back towards the workshop stair and asks about the repair period. Mara states the condition for reopening. Neri leans forward behind the upper rail, their binoculars in their hands, and asks where they will sleep.
Mara: "Your house stays isolated."
Ivo: "Even while we repair it?"
Mara: "Until the repair passes its checks."
Neri: "Where are we supposed to sleep?"
Sequence 9: Two places
Mara comes up the protected stair towards Neri while Ivo stays below. Neri holds their bird notebook tightly against their grey overshirt. Mara stops across the landing rail to speak with them. Tamsin uses a handheld radio beside a shelter list, asking for two places together. The exposed flats and supported house caissons remain visible beyond the rails.
Mara: "On the upper bank tonight."
Neri: "You have decided that too."
Mara: "I cannot tell you this room is safe."
Tamsin: "I need two places. Together."
Sequence 10: What kindness permits
Ivo asks Mara whether the control can stay open while they pack. She refuses, with Tamsin beside them and Neri still behind the upper rail. Mara then lifts an empty small olive canvas bag from the dry bench and offers to help carry their things. Ivo takes the bag with both hands. Neither of them smiles.
Ivo: "Can we keep it open while we pack?"
Mara: "No."
Mara: "I can help carry things."
Sequence 11: Isolated
At a separate protected shared manifold, Mara operates a red straight isolation lever while Tamsin watches closely and Ivo stands back. The brass wheel from the failed exercise is not used. Several round branch gauges remain visible. Mara and Tamsin watch the other indicators. Mara ties a white tag reading 'ISOLATED' to Ivo's closed branch control, while Ivo and Tamsin observe. The real caissons beyond the bay remain on their supports.
Tamsin: "The other branches are steady."
Mara: "Record it. Then leave it closed."
Sequence 12: Whose choice
In the modest room above Ivo's workshop, Neri packs their binoculars into a small olive cloth bag beside their bird notebook. Bird drawings hang on the wall, with two blue-and-white mugs and a narrow unmade bed nearby. Ivo stands in the open doorway, then comes inside while leaving space between them. Neri turns to face him. Ivo accepts that his concealed fault excluded them from the decision and lowers his eyes.
Neri: "She gets to shut our door."
Ivo: "I left the fault out."
Neri: "You left us out."
Ivo: "Yes."
Sequence 13: What comes upstairs
Mara retrieves her ochre jacket from its high hook, her charcoal sleeves pushed up and her shoulder bag on the bench below. Wearing the jacket again, she carries a pillow and rolled blanket beside Ivo, who holds the small canvas bag. The workshop lathe remains in place. On the guarded landing, Tamsin puts down her radio after confirming two beds. Neri adjusts the strap of their own cloth bag and looks towards the uphill walkway.
Tamsin: "Two beds are ready on the bank."
Neri: "I heard."
Sequence 14: The walk
Ivo and Neri walk ahead up the broad guarded ramp towards the solid upper bank, carrying small olive bags. Neri keeps their bird notebook with them. Mara and Tamsin follow with bedding; Mara carries the grey blanket and cream pillow, and Tamsin a separate green bedroll. Ivo glances towards Neri, who keeps looking ahead. At the lit shelter doorway, an adult attendant in a brown cardigan checks a list. Two empty beds are visible inside. Neri places their notebook on a bedside table while Ivo sets his canvas bag on the other bed. They remain apart in the same room.
Sequence 15: An honest record
Mara and Tamsin return alone to the common dry table. Mara lays the maintenance checklist beside her chipped yellow cup while Tamsin opens a folder headed 'HARBOUR RECORDS'. They compare an official harbour chart with a copied low-water map. Ivo and Neri are absent, having reached the shelter. The workshop stands empty, its heavy lathe and hand tools still in place. A final close view shows the white 'ISOLATED' tag on the separate red branch lever, with the jammed brass round wheel farther back in shadow.
Mara: "The valve stays on the list."
Tamsin: "So does the water it has to face."
