Page 1
1. Neri joins Eda and two workers pushing the long lever around the millstone.
Eda: “Push with the turn. Not against it.”
2. Neri adjusts her gloved hands and stance at the wooden beam.
Neri: “Like this?”
3. Eda nods as they keep the lever moving together.
Eda: “Now keep it there.”
4. A thin stream of flour falls into a wooden tray.
Neri: “All that work. For this?”
Page 2
1. The workers pause. Neri rubs her forearms while a worker measures flour.
Eda: “Enough for tonight. If we share it.”
2. Outside in the moonlight, Eda shows Neri the dry sluice and stopped waterwheel.
Eda: “The stream stopped before the wind did.”
3. They look up at the motionless sails above the same mill.
Eda: “We used the sails through dry summers.”
4. Neri considers the two failed sources of power.
Neri: “This time both stopped.”
Page 3
1. Eda turns an inspection handle as a worker feeds grain into the hopper. Neri watches the drive.
Eda: “Nobody can leave the mill to report.”
2. A crack opens in a wooden drive pin.
Neri: “Wait. That pin is opening.”
3. Eda raises her hand to stop the workers. Neri keeps clear of the mechanism.
Eda: “Stop pushing!”
4. With the mill stopped, Eda removes the broken wooden pin.
Eda: “Better a broken pin than a broken hand.”
Page 4
1. Neri holds the broken pieces while Eda opens a tool chest.
Neri: “Can we replace it?”
2. Eda selects a wooden spare, leaving the metal rod in the drawer.
Eda: “Wood. It must break before the drive does.”
3. Eda aligns the replacement in the stopped drive. A worker steadies the beam as Neri passes a mallet.
Neri: “So it saved the drive.”
4. The broken wooden pieces lie on Neri’s open ledger beside her pencil.
Eda: “Write that down too.”
Page 5
1. At the mill table, Eda unwraps a bundle of returned papers while Neri opens the ledger.
Neri: “Ilen said no report came back.”
2. Eda spreads reports bearing crossed-circle return stamps on the table.
Eda: “We sent these. The upper lift stopped taking them.”
3. Neri compares an official route map with a drawing of the valley’s mill, houses and fields.
Neri: “Your houses are not on this copy.”
4. Eda leans toward Neri. Behind her, the workers share bread.
Eda: “We are here when they count the grain.”
Page 6
1. Neri begins adding the lower settlement to the route map as Eda watches.
Neri: “Then I will put you back.”
2. Eda points to the map, asking Neri to listen before drawing.
Eda: “Ask us where. You have only seen the mill.”
3. Neri and Eda walk through the houses. Residents point out the dry seed beds and shared water supplies.
Neri: “What must the ridge know first?”
4. An elderly woman passes a cup to a younger neighbour at the communal barrel. Neri and Eda listen.
Eda: “That jars delivered are not the same as needs met.”
Page 7
1. Neri waits while Eda checks the completed route sketch against the returned papers.
Neri: “Read it before I carry it.”
2. Eda points out the east steps and Neri adds the missing homes.
Eda: “The east steps. Two households there.”
3. Neri ties the papers together. The two broken wooden pin pieces sit in an open cloth pouch beside them.
Neri: “Will you come and tell them yourself?”
4. Eda looks toward the workers sharing breakfast and considers leaving with Neri.
Eda: “If they can eat while I am gone.”
Page 8
1. Eda opens a cupboard to reveal one sealed ceramic wind jar marked with a spiral.
Eda: “Our last stored gust.”
2. The sealed spiral jar stands beside the route ledger, pencil and a small seal.
Neri: “Enough to grind the waiting grain?”
3. Eda brings the still-sealed jar to the gathered neighbours. Neri carries the checked papers.
Eda: “Perhaps. It belongs to all of us.”
4. Neri sits beside Eda in the circle. The jar remains sealed in the middle of the table.
Neri: “Then all of you decide.”
