Episode summary

Neri mistakes a sheltered indicator for a safe opening. The test costs a crossing, a rain reserve and Eda's trust.

Neri mistakes a sheltered indicator for a safe opening. The test costs a crossing, a rain reserve and Eda’s trust.

Eda takes the lower route and defines the two-arm signal before the test.

Eda clears the lower crossing while Neri mistakes a pointing arm for readiness.

Neri opens one notch early; the sheltered ribbon fails to show the rushing air.

A dry wind surge breaks the empty crossing and spills the rain jar; Eda and two workers stay safe.

Varo closes the bypass with Neri, who leaves to see the damage.

Nobody is hurt, but the rain has escaped and the shortest route is broken.

Neri admits the premature opening and records her responsibility in the ledger.

Eda refuses easy reassurance and tells Neri to start by listening.

Transcript

Page 1

1. Eda carries the padded rain jar down the lower stone stair. Neri waits by the locked bypass wheel above.

Eda: "Two raised arms. That is my signal."

2. Varo unlocks the bypass and hands Neri the key, keeping his cane in his other hand.

Varo: "One notch when she is ready."

3. Ilen leaves with a worker towards the shutter brace. Neri looks at the dark cloud front.

Ilen: "I will check the supports."

4. Neri watches Eda disappear behind a rock spur. A sheltered ribbon hangs limp beside the wheel.

Neri: "I can still see the crossing."

Page 2

1. On the lower stone landing Eda sets the padded rain crate on a wooden shelf above the spillway.

Eda: "Clear the walkway first."

2. Two workers step off the empty timber walkway onto firm stone. Eda points towards the open air beyond a wall.

Eda: "The wind must be checked out there."

3. Above, Neri looks from the empty crossing to the limp ribbon beneath the roof.

Neri: "Nobody on it. No wind."

4. Neri peers down as Eda lifts one arm to point a worker away, not raising both arms.

Neri: "Was that the signal?"

Page 3

1. Neri hesitates with her gloved hand on the bypass wheel. Varo is checking the brace a few steps away.

Neri: "Only the first notch."

2. Close view: Neri turns the wheel to the first notch. The narrow wooden bypass shutter opens a crack.

Neri: "We need the time."

3. Air streaks down the channel while the ribbon under the roof remains slack. Neri looks startled.

Neri: "The ribbon has not moved."

4. Varo turns sharply at the hiss. Neri grips the wheel.

Varo: "That is sheltered air!"

Page 4

1. At the lower spillway Eda braces on solid stone as a gust tears across the empty timber walkway.

Eda: "Back against the wall!"

2. A rotten support splits. The empty walkway sags into the spillway, striking the shelf beneath the rain crate.

Eda: "Leave the crate!"

3. The sealed droplet-marked ceramic jar falls from its padded crate and cracks on a rock. A small burst of rain escapes over bare stone.

Eda: "No!"

4. Water runs uselessly into the spillway while the splintered walkway hangs empty. Eda and both workers are safe on stone.

Eda: "Everyone answer me."

Page 5

1. Varo guides Neri to return the handwheel slowly to its closed stop.

Varo: "Back to the stop. Slowly."

2. The bypass closes. Neri looks past the wheel towards the damaged crossing.

Neri: "I thought she was ready."

3. Varo holds his cane still and faces Neri.

Varo: "You were meant to know."

4. Neri sets down the key and runs towards the stone stairs, leaving the wheel with Varo.

Neri: "I will go down."

Page 6

1. Neri arrives on the stone landing. Eda counts two shaken but unhurt workers beside her.

Eda: "Nobody hurt."

2. Neri kneels beside the broken rain jar. Its droplet emblem is split in two.

Neri: "Can we catch any of it?"

3. Eda points at the last thin runnel disappearing into dry gravel.

Eda: "It has gone."

4. Beyond them the broken walkway cuts across the shortest valley route.

Eda: "And that route has gone with it."

Page 7

1. At the landing, Ilen holds the ledger as Neri faces her and Eda.

Neri: "I opened before her signal."

2. Neri points up at the sheltered ridge roof without making an excuse.

Neri: "I trusted the wrong indicator."

3. Ilen records the lost jar and crossing beside sketches of the damaged route. Eda watches.

Ilen: "One jar. One crossing. Put both down."

4. Neri writes beside the sketches while Eda looks at the damage.

Neri: "And who opened it."

Page 8

1. Neri offers to take Eda's tool basket. Eda keeps hold of it.

Neri: "Tell me what to carry."

2. Eda looks directly at Neri, neither shouting nor smiling.

Eda: "You promised to wait."

3. Neri lowers her empty hand. The broken jar lies between them.

Neri: "I did."

4. Eda turns towards the long stone route as the storm front darkens the ridge. Neri stays behind with the ledger.

Eda: "Then start by listening."
