Episode summary

Two half-full tanks look reassuring until Mina reads their capacities. A short calculation keeps the service boat at the dock for one essential refill.

Page 1: two half-full tanks look sufficient until Mina asks about their capacities.

Page 2: the children read capacities of 12 litres and 24 litres.

Page 3: an exact diagram shows 6 litres plus 12 litres, totalling 18 litres.

Page 4: the boat stays moored while the missing 2 litres are measured and added.

Page 5: the children agree to record units and listen to Mina.

Page 6: the checked boat reaches Gull Relay, where a paper message glider has fallen.

Inside the discovery

A fraction depends on its whole. Half of 12 litres is 6 litres; half of 24 litres is 12 litres. The same fraction can describe different amounts. The flying service boat and its cooling system are invented. The arithmetic is real.

Starting points: Halving even whole numbers, addition and subtraction to 24, recognising litres as a volume unit.

A 10-litre tank is half full and a 16-litre tank is half full. How much water is there altogether?

Half of 10 L is 5 L. Half of 16 L is 8 L. Together they hold 5 + 8 = 13 L.

Ages 9-11. Independent educator review and supervised reader testing have not yet been completed. The optional question needs only thought or paper and pencil.

Panel 1: Kit gestures proudly towards two brass tanks on the boat. Ada and Mina listen.
Kit: Both tanks are half full. We're ready!

Panel 2: Captain Sora checks the departure list beside the three children.
Sora: We need twenty litres. Reserve included.

Panel 3: Ada points towards the smaller tank. Kit thinks about her answer.
Ada: Two halves make a whole. Enough, surely?

Panel 4: Mina leans towards the tanks, which have different widths.
Mina: A whole what? These tanks differ.

Panel 1: Kit points at the tanks' water-level windows. Sora watches.
Kit: But both are halfway full!

Panel 2: Mina points towards the smaller tank while Ada studies the larger one.
Mina: Half of which tank? Read the capacities.

Panel 3: Ada compares the tanks as Kit holds her notebook.
Ada: 12 litres here. 24 litres there.

Panel 4: Kit pauses to think. Mina smiles beside him.
Kit: Same fraction. Different wholes.

Panel 1: Ada holds her notebook beside a clear tank diagram.
Ada: Six litres here. Twelve there.
Diagram: two rectangular tanks of capacities 12 L and 24 L are half full. They hold 6 L and 12 L. The total is 18 L, which is 2 L below the stated 20 L requirement.

Panel 2: Mina works with her pencil while Kit listens.
Mina: Six plus twelve. Eighteen litres.

Panel 3: Kit holds up two fingers. Ada checks her notebook.
Kit: Two litres short. Twenty minus eighteen.

Panel 4: Sora stands beside the securely tied mooring rope. The children stay aboard.
Sora: We stay moored until we have enough.

Panel 1: Kit reaches towards a bucket on the dock. His friends and Sora watch.
Kit: I'll fetch the water. We nearly left short.

Panel 2: Mina offers Kit a clear measuring jug beside the tap.
Mina: Use the jug. A bucketful isn't a number.

Panel 3: Kit fills the jug under Sora's supervision while Ada records the amount.
Ada: Eighteen litres, then two more.

Panel 4: Kit hands the jug to Sora, who pours water into the reservoir.
Kit: Twenty litres. This time, checked.

Panel 1: Sora checks her clipboard beside the closed tank. The children listen.
Sora: Checks cost time. Running short costs more.

Panel 2: Ada writes in her notebook while Kit looks over.
Ada: I'll record every unit.

Panel 3: Kit smiles ruefully beside Mina.
Kit: Half of what? I'll ask first.

Panel 4: Mina smiles at Ada and Kit. They listen to her.
Mina: You heard me this time.

Page 6

Panel 1: Ada and Kit turn towards Mina as Sora prepares the boat.
Ada: We'll leave you room. We need your ideas.

Panel 2: Sora steers towards a floating relay station marked by a golden gull.
Sora: Gull Relay first. We need a fresh report.

Panel 3: Kit points at a paper message glider beside the station.
Kit: It's falling!

Panel 4: On the secure landing, Mina holds the fallen paper message. Sora and the other children gather around.
Mina: Let's check before we fix it.
