A fallen paper message leads the apprentices to compare shapes fairly. A slower, sheltered delivery brings news from Brindle.

Air resistance opposes movement through air. For paper falling through still air, it acts upwards while gravity pulls downwards. Shape can affect the resistance. A fair comparison keeps the paper, starting height and release method the same. Repeating it checks whether the pattern is consistent. A drop test does not explain everything about gliding aircraft.
Before you begin: Recognising shape, observing which object lands first, understanding same and different.
Kit changes the paper shape and drops it from a higher shelf. Can he tell whether shape alone caused the difference?
No. Both shape and starting height changed. Keep the starting height the same while comparing shapes, and repeat the comparison.
Suggested reading age: 9–11. This fantasy story revisits selected primary learning ideas; it is not a complete curriculum. Floating islands and the Atlas Engine are fictional. Independent educator review and reader testing are pending.

Panel 1: Kit studies a fallen folded paper message on Gull Relay's safe landing. Mina and Ada gather beside him. A golden gull ornaments the doorway.
Kit: "One bent wing. I'll make it sharper!"
Panel 2: Mina holds her red pencil and looks from the paper to the relay doorway. Kit stops reshaping it.
Mina: "First, where was it meant to go?"
Panel 3: Captain Sora shows the children a narrow glass-fronted vertical paper chute inside a brass-and-timber relay room. Chute starts at waist height and ends in a padded floor tray. An open window nearby. Children on floor.
Sora: "Down the message shaft. A draught caught it."
Panel 4: Ada crouches beside the floor-level collecting tray. Kit and Mina inspect the short paper chute.
Ada: "Then distance isn't the problem. Landing gently is."
Page 2
Panel 1: Sora closes the relay window. Three children stand beside a waist-high table with cream paper.
Sora: "Window shut. We can compare shapes in still air."
Panel 2: Kit shows a broad square sheet of paper and a compact crumpled paper ball on a desk. Ada watches.
Kit: "A flat square and a scrunched one. Same paper."
Panel 3: Ada checks the two paper shapes with her blue notebook. Mina holds a spare equal square.
Ada: "Same amount, too. Nothing added or cut away."
Panel 4: Mina points to a plain horizontal starting line at waist height. Kit holds flat and crumpled paper at the same height above a clear floor. Sora supervises.
Mina: "Same height. Let go together. No throwing."
Page 3
Panel 1: Kit watches a paper ball on the floor while a broad sheet flutters above it. Ada and Mina watch.
Kit: "The scrunched one landed first!"
Panel 2: Ada records an observation in her notebook while Mina gathers the two shapes.
Ada: "One try is a clue. Let's repeat it."
Panel 3: Mina observes a repeated gentle paper drop. Broad sheet falling above the compact ball on the floor. Kit and Ada compare calmly.
Mina: "Again... and again. The broad sheet keeps landing later."
Panel 4: Sora points to a board showing the directions of air resistance and gravity on falling paper.
Sora: "Air resistance opposes movement through the air."

Panel 1: Ada holds the broad paper flat above the table. Kit listens.
Ada: "As paper falls, air resistance acts upwards."
Panel 2: Kit grins sheepishly beside Mina. Two paper shapes on the table.
Kit: "Slower wins? I don't say that often."
Panel 3: Mina points towards the short indoor paper chute and safe collecting tray. Ada nods.
Mina: "Only this drop."
Panel 4: Sora supervises Kit folding shallow edges on a broad paper tray at the table. A small cream note lies beside it.
Sora: "Broad carrier. Then test it."
Page 5
Panel 1: Kit releases a shallow paper carrier with a small flat note into the top of the waist-high glass-fronted chute. All children stand on the floor.
Kit: "No extra push. I'm waiting this time."
Panel 2: Ada kneels beside the padded floor tray and lifts the broad paper carrier with its small note still inside. Mina watches.
Ada: "It reached the tray. The message stayed inside."
Panel 3: Mina holds a spare note while Kit prepares another carrier test.
Mina: "Try it again before we trust it with the only copy."
Panel 4: Kit opens the recovered original note on the desk. Ada and Mina lean in. Sora watches.
Kit: "Three safe landings. Now, what did we miss?"
Page 6
Panel 1: Ada reads a cream note. Mina looks concerned and Kit listens.
Ada: "Brindle's report! 'Service door jammed. Please send help.'"
Panel 2: Mina looks towards Brindle through the relay viewing window. Ada holds her notebook.
Mina: "They were reporting all along. The map didn't show them."
Panel 3: Sora leads the apprentices from the relay landing to their tied indigo boat. Ada keeps the report in her blue notebook.
Sora: "I'll take us there. We have a place to check."
Panel 4: Kit stands behind the boat rail with Ada and Mina as Brindle's green floating island and red-roof lighthouse draw nearer. Sora steers.
Kit: "And a door to open. Carefully."
