Episode summary

A checked route brings overdue supplies to Brindle. Ada, Kit and Mina return home with a better way to ask, listen and record.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 1. Ada checks the route chart with Mina aboard the moored service boat. Kit checks the two brass water tanks while Mina watches. Mina points to the planned route as Ada holds the safe enclosed signal lamp. Sora reviews the final departure checks and secured supply crates with the apprentices.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 2. Kit points towards a cloud gap beyond the planned route while Sora studies the chart. Mina looks directly at Kit; a cloud-shadowed route lies in the distance. Kit lowers his pointing hand and returns to the agreed chart, a small satisfied smile. Sora checks cargo straps and the boat controls; apprentices stand safely behind a rail.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 3. The service boat approaches Brindle on its checked route, Ada compares the lighthouse silhouette to her notebook. Mina sees Aunt Liora on a broad sheltered dock below the lighthouse. Sora brings the boat to the dock while apprentices wait behind the rail. Kit moves clear of Sora's working space while adult dock workers secure the boat.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 4. Aunt Liora, adult medium-brown-skinned woman with black hair pinned back and a teal work apron, embraces Mina on a broad dock; Ada, Kit and Sora smile nearby. Mina smiles at Liora; the familiar emergency lantern hangs beside the lighthouse entrance. Ada hands Liora a tied packet of reports while adult workers carry the secured supplies onto the dock. Liora looks towards a gathering of relieved Brindle neighbours beside delivered crates.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 5. Vale at the Brindle's Atlas report hall shows a map with visible unlabelled report markers and a separate pending tray. Ada tells Vale what she learned, her notebook open beside the new map. Kit sets his tool satchel down and listens to Mina at the desk. Mina smiles at her attentive friends, Vale and Sora in the background.

The Atlas Engine, Chapter 8, page 6. Sora pilots the service boat away from Brindle at warm sunset, apprentices safely behind a rail. Ada closes her blue notebook with a thoughtful smile, distant islands behind. Kit offers pieces of a biscuit to Ada and Mina on the quiet boat deck. Wide final sunset view of the three children together aboard the boat, looking back at Brindle's illuminated lighthouse; hopeful, complete ending.

Inside the discovery

Use current evidence together: confirmed waypoints and their dates, enough water including the planned reserve, and an answering signal. A checked route applies to the journey it was checked for. In the story the islands move, so later journeys need fresh reports. An uncertain report should prompt checking, not erase a community.

Before you begin: Reading simple measurements, centimetres and metres, subtraction and checking the date of evidence.

Try the idea

Why should tomorrow’s journey check the reports again?

Reveal the answer

The islands can move and conditions can change. Today’s checked route is evidence for today, not a promise about every later journey.

Suggested reading age: 9-11. This fantasy story revisits selected primary learning ideas; it is not a complete curriculum. Floating islands and the Atlas Engine are fictional. Independent educator review and reader testing are pending.
