The Twelfth Lantern
Season 1: The Dark Moon
Episode 9: The Night Haneul Left
P01
At dusk, Haneul leaves the tea house carrying her olive suitcase. She wears the inherited grey jacket and red scarf. The second letter stays sealed in her pocket.
Narrator: That evening, Haneul left without saying goodbye.
P02
A yellow village bus winds down a dark mountain road, leaving Cheongsan behind. No dialogue.
P03
Haneul stands among commuters on a wet Seoul pavement, suitcase in hand.
Narrator: Seoul. Somewhere she knew how to disappear.
P04
At a crossing, Haneul pauses among people, traffic and rain. The city continues moving, but its sounds have vanished.
Narrator: Then the traffic fell silent. Even the rain made no sound.
P05
Haneul sits alone at a bus shelter. Her suitcase stands beside her and her phone lies face down on the bench.
Narrator: She had been here before.
P06
Memory, August: Haneul sits in an office after dark, wearing a cream work blouse. Her teal coat and red scarf hang on the chair. Her phone and suitcase are untouched.
Narrator: August. The night she heard Halmeoni had died.
P07
The August memory continues. Haneul sits rigidly at the desk. The suitcase remains beside her chair.
Narrator: She told herself she would arrive too late.
Narrator: So she stayed where there was still something to finish.
P08
An earlier memory of Halmeoni alive: silver hair in a low bun with a jade hairpin, grey jacket, a cup cradled in both hands. A place waits at the tea-house table. This is a memory, not a present-day apparition.
Narrator: What she remembered was not a funeral. It was the place kept for her.
P09
Back at the Seoul shelter, Haneul admits the truth aloud.
Haneul: I couldn't bear to see that you were gone.
P10
Haneul asks an ordinary terminal clerk for a ticket home. Her suitcase stands beside her.
Haneul: One ticket to Cheongsan, please.
P11
At the open bus door, Haneul holds her suitcase and looks into the warm light before boarding.
Haneul: I'm coming back.
P12
Looking into the passenger cabin before she boards: every passenger seat is empty. Rain streaks the night windows. The driver position is outside the frame.
Narrator: The last bus home was empty.
