The Twelfth Lantern
Season 2, Episode 5: Harbour Lights
Series episode 17
Content note: supernatural memory loss.
Panel 1. February in Busan. Boats lie tied beside a harbour lighthouse, whose ordinary navigation light is working.
Caption: February. Busan.
Panel 2. Haneul and Go stop at a fish stall. Go carries her gold travelling lantern in her right hand and her bag on her left shoulder. Bit looks towards the fish. The stall sign reads 생선 (saengseon, Fish).
Bit: At last. A sensible use of the sea.
Panel 3. Bit stands on a dry crate beside the fish display. Fish seller Im Dae-sik holds out an empty palm.
Dae-sik: That one costs money.
Panel 4. Haneul crouches and lowers Bit to the ground, supporting his chest and belly with both hands. Dae-sik watches.
Bit: So does advice. Yours was unwanted.
Panel 5. Dae-sik and a shopper look puzzled. He holds a receipt headed 영수증 (yeongsujeung, Receipt), while she holds her basket.
Dae-sik: What was I keeping for you?
Panel 6. Haneul turns towards the lighthouse workroom, sensing that the forgetting has reached this harbour.
Haneul: It's here too.
Panel 7. Go consults a handwritten card in her left hand. It reads 표재욱 (Pyo Jae-uk, the name rendered as Pyo Jae-wook in the English story) and 등대 관리실 (deungdae gwanrisil, Lighthouse office). Her travelling lantern remains gold in her right hand. A separate tailless English document-reading bubble gives: Pyo Jae-wook. Lighthouse office.
Go: Jae-wook will know where it began.
Panel 8. Haneul, Bit and Go climb the public steps beside a safety rail to the lighthouse workroom. A small plaque reads 관리실 (gwanrisil, Office). Silent panel.
Panel 9. Inside the keeper's workroom, the cream paper lantern on the shelf is dark. An ordinary electric desk lamp remains lit. Silent panel.
Panel 10. Keeper Pyo Jae-wook sits at his desk with an empty mug supported on the tabletop. He looks towards the entrance with polite uncertainty.
Jae-wook: Have we met?
Panel 11. Haneul turns towards a side exit. Beyond the door, only a departing woman's grey coat, red scarf and a dark shoe are visible. The door hides her head and face. Silent panel.
Panel 12. From the lighthouse threshold, Haneul watches the unidentified woman walk away along the quay. The woman remains entirely back to the viewer in her grey coat and red scarf. Silent panel.
End of Season 2, Episode 5.
