Episode summary

Back in Cheongsan, Haneul follows Bit into a memory held by the First Lantern.

Haneul stands outside the warmly lit tea house after returning from Seoul. Her brown boots rest on the stone path beside the steps. Haneul sits at the tea-house threshold facing Bit, who sits beside her on the wooden ledge. They look at each other.
From the reverse angle, Haneul leans towards Bit with the blue evening courtyard behind them. He listens with his head raised. Haneul speaks quietly, remembering the people she saw in Seoul. The cool courtyard remains behind her.
In the stone cellar, Haneul and Bit sit beside the First Lantern. Its rectangular paper body and repaired patch rest on the low stone plinth, with the stairs at the right. Haneul kneels beside Bit in the First Lantern's warm light. His single tail lies on the stone floor, with its intact tip unlit.
Haneul watches a warm memory of Halmeoni as a younger woman and a young girl seated at a low tea table. The remembered pair attend only to each other. The young girl steadies a celadon cup on the table with both hands. Halmeoni watches kindly, and a folded cloth lies within reach.
Halmeoni reaches for the folded cloth while the young girl keeps the cup supported on the table. Halmeoni and the young girl laugh together. The cup and cloth stay on the table between them.
Haneul watches with sudden recognition. She realises that the young girl in the memory is her mother. Haneul says goodbye to her grandmother's memory. Behind her, Halmeoni and the young girl remain absorbed in their own past moment and do not respond.
Back in the cellar, Haneul leans towards the subdued Bit beside the First Lantern. His single tail retains its dark, unlit tip. Bit sits on the cellar floor and looks up at Haneul as he makes his confession. His light remains faint, with the intact tail tip unlit.
