A stuck latch keeps the apprentices outside Brindle's service room. Kit learns where to apply his effort.

A lever turns about a pivot, or fulcrum. With the load at the same distance from that pivot, a longer effort arm can reduce the force needed. The effort end moves farther. The diagram is a simplified model; real mechanisms also involve friction.
Before you begin: Reading simple diagrams, comparing observations and recognising measurement units.
The load stays in the same place. Would pushing farther from the pivot usually need more force or less?
Less force, in this simplified lever model. The effort end travels farther.
Suggested reading age: 9–11. This fantasy story revisits selected primary learning ideas; it is not a complete curriculum. Floating islands and the Atlas Engine are fictional. Independent educator review and reader testing are pending.

Panel 1: Kit tries a small waist-high metal latch on Brindle lighthouse service door; Sora supervises beside three children on flat landing.
Kit: "It says 'lift'. I am lifting!"
Panel 2: Mina points to the small stuck latch while Kit lets go; Ada studies the door.
Mina: "The door is not what needs lifting."
Panel 3: Sora secures the door and latch mechanism; children stand aside safely.
Sora: "Hands back. I'll secure it."
Panel 4: Ada sketches the small latch in her blue notebook with friends looking.
Ada: "The latch is caught. Why?"

Panel 1: Kit points towards a long wooden handle on a low workbench, Sora listens.
Kit: "Could a handle help us turn it?"
Panel 2: Sora places a tabletop lever model with a fixed triangular fulcrum and small wooden block, children gather around.
Sora: "Let's try a little model first."
Panel 3: Mina points to the tabletop triangular pivot under a straight wooden bar.
Mina: "This support stays still. The bar turns around it."
Panel 4: Ada records the observation; model beside her on table.
Ada: "Fulcrum. A name for the turning point."
Page 3
Panel 1: Kit gently presses lever near its central pivot; small wooden block on opposite end, no heavy loads.
Kit: "Near the pivot, that takes quite a push."
Panel 2: Mina indicates the far end of the same tabletop lever while block and pivot stay fixed.
Mina: "Keep the block there. Try farther along the other side."
Panel 3: Kit presses the far effort end down and small block rises on opposite side of fixed pivot.
Kit: "That is easier! The end moves farther, though."
Panel 4: Ada points to a diagram of a lever showing the load, fulcrum, and longer effort arm.
Ada: "Longer effort arm. Less force for the same load."

Panel 1: Sora examines the secured latch; model remains safely on table.
Sora: "Useful. But our latch also has friction."
Panel 2: Kit looks from model to full service door, thoughtful rather than rushing.
Kit: "So the drawing isn't the whole door."
Panel 3: Mina notices a bent metal guide beside the latch; Sora inspects it, children hands clear.
Mina: "We still need to see what is stuck."
Panel 4: Adult Sora alone adjusts the isolated secured latch with proper hand tool; children watch from distance.
Sora: "A bent guide. I'll loosen it and use the service handle."
Page 5
Panel 1: Ada observes from safely beside Mina as Sora fits the service handle.
Ada: "The support stays fixed. The handle turns."
Panel 2: Kit stands with Ada and Mina behind the safe work boundary, not holding a load.
Kit: "I could help by keeping everyone clear."
Panel 3: Sora calmly checks the children's safe positions before turning the service handle.
Sora: "That is helping. Ready? Stand there."
Panel 4: Sora lifts the small latch with the long handle, children observe; door still supported normally on hinges.
Mina: "It's moving! Only a little, but enough."
Page 6
Panel 1: Kit smiles at the open hinged service door beside his friends, no suspended door.
Kit: "We didn't lift the door after all."
Panel 2: Ada closes her notebook and enters beside Sora.
Ada: "We changed how the effort reached the latch."
Panel 3: Mina points to a small warm lantern in the lighthouse window; room dim, Sora and friends present.
Mina: "Aunt Liora left her emergency lantern in the window."
Panel 4: Sora looks at a large dark fictional lighthouse lamp while small emergency lantern glows nearby.
Sora: "Then that was the light we saw. The main lamp is dark."
