Inside Brindle's dark service room, a small inspection lamp helps the children understand a broken circuit.

A simple circuit needs a complete conducting path from one terminal of a cell, through the lamp and back to the other terminal. An open switch breaks that path. Closing it completes the loop. The diagram is a low-voltage model, separate from the invented lighthouse machinery, which the adult operates.
Before you begin: Reading simple diagrams, comparing observations and recognising measurement units.
There is one gap in a simple cell-and-lamp circuit. Will adding a second lamp close that gap?
No. The conducting path still has a gap. The circuit must form a complete loop.
Suggested reading age: 9–11. This fantasy story revisits selected primary learning ideas; it is not a complete curriculum. Floating islands and the Atlas Engine are fictional. Independent educator review and reader testing are pending.

Panel 1: Mina looks at emergency lantern on lighthouse windowsill with Ada and Kit.
Mina: "The lantern told us Brindle was here."
Panel 2: Ada looks from notebook chart to glowing emergency lantern, thoughtful.
Ada: "One small light against an official map."
Panel 3: Kit gestures towards dark fictional lighthouse machinery while Sora stands beside its closed cabinet.
Kit: "Can we wake the lamp?"
Panel 4: Sora sets a small low-voltage cell-and-lamp demonstration kit on a table away from main machinery.
Sora: "I'll handle the supply. Try the inspection lamp."

Panel 1: Ada studies a simple educational lamp kit on table with Sora supervising; no mains outlet.
Ada: "A cell, a lamp, wires and a switch."
Panel 2: Kit looks puzzled at an unlit small bulb and an open demonstration switch.
Kit: "The cell is there. Why isn't it shining?"
Panel 3: Mina points to the gap in the switch, children simply observing tabletop model.
Mina: "A gap - at the switch."
Panel 4: Ada draws a path in notebook while Kit follows the wires with his eyes.
Ada: "I see. Parts aren't enough."

Panel 1: Sora points to a circuit diagram showing a cell, lamp, wires and an open switch. The gap interrupts the loop.
Sora: "Back to the other terminal."

Panel 2: Kit studies the tabletop cell and lamp with Ada beside him.
Kit: "A complete loop, then."
Panel 3: Mina observes clearly raised switch handle beside unlit bulb in low-voltage kit.
Mina: "The open switch leaves a gap."
Panel 4: Sora alone closes the demonstration switch, children watching from across table.
Sora: "I'll close this one so you can watch."

Panel 1: Ada smiles at lit low-voltage bulb on the table; circuit fully connected.
Ada: "There it is! The little lamp shines."
Panel 2: Sora opens tabletop switch; Kit and Mina watch small bulb go dark.
Kit: "And opening the switch breaks the loop again."
Panel 3: Mina stands back beside Ada while Sora goes to main machinery cabinet.
Mina: "No touching. Just looking."
Panel 4: Sora opens adult-only service cabinet, children remain at table with notebook.
Sora: "The lighthouse stays with me."

Panel 1: Ada reads a maintenance card held by Sora; no legible generated lettering.
Ada: "The record says the supply was isolated."
Panel 2: Sora inspects secured fictional machinery cabinet, hand on clipboard, children in background.
Sora: "For repairs. Nobody restored it."
Panel 3: Kit quietly reflects beside Ada and Mina, the small kit on table.
Kit: "Like our missed water check."
Panel 4: Mina gives Ada red pencil beside notebook while adult works away from children.
Mina: "Record the switch position."

Panel 1: Sora operates closed fictional lighthouse control panel; children behind safe railing.
Sora: "All checked. Restoring the light."
Panel 2: Warm lights illuminate the lighthouse service gallery, children delighted beside Sora.
Kit: "It's on! The gallery is bright again."
Panel 3: Ada points along an L-shaped interior gallery with a wall blocking direct view to distant receiving desk.
Ada: "The desk is around that corner."
Panel 4: Mina studies a small plane mirror in a safe stand beside gallery wall, other children attentive.
Mina: "A mirror can turn it."
