Chapter 5: Neri and Eda reach the ridge and discover why a protective closure became a valley-wide shortage. A test is agreed - but only after a signal from below.

Page 1
1. Neri and Eda climb onto a ridge works platform under towering closed wooden weather shutters. Older keeper Varo, cropped grey hair, short dark vest and a cane, bars their way.
Varo: "The capture crew is due."
2. Eda lays the two broken pieces of the mill drive pin on Varo's table. Neri sets down the ledger.
Eda: "So is the valley's answer."
3. Neri opens the checked map and returned reports; Eda points to the lower homes.
Neri: "These homes never reached your ledger."
4. Varo studies the broken wood, then turns toward the vast closed shutter frame.
Varo: "Come. See what it does record."
Page 2
1. Varo leads Neri and Eda along a protected walkway overlooking weather funnels and rows of sealed ceramic jars.
Varo: "We catch passing weather. We do not make it."
2. Close view of Varo pointing to a small branch funnel beside the broad main passage. Neri follows his hand.
Varo: "This branch takes a share for the jars."
3. Eda looks through the closed wooden shutters toward the dry valley and still mill below.
Eda: "And the rest should pass down to us."
4. Varo grips his cane beside a storm-split brace repaired with iron straps.
Varo: "Until this broke."
Page 3
1. Varo touches the repaired brace. Neri examines the bolt holes without touching the controls.
Varo: "We closed the shutters to save the frame."
2. Neri looks past the brace at the dark main drive gear. Varo stands beside it.
Neri: "How long was the repair meant to take?"
3. Varo's face tightens. Behind him jars stand in numbered racks with no readable writing.
Varo: "Three days. Then the next capture came."
4. Eda places the broken mill pin beside the repaired brace.
Eda: "The valley stayed closed with it."
Page 4
1. Varo brings them to a small separate handwheel beside a narrow bypass duct, physically apart from the main gear.
Varo: "This bypass works without the main gear."
2. Close view of his hand resting on the stationary wheel with clear evenly spaced notch marks. Neri watches.
Varo: "One notch. Then wait for the air below."
3. Neri looks down from the ridge at the exposed wooden walkway above a lower stone path.
Neri: "Why wait between openings?"
4. Varo points down the channel toward that frail walkway. Eda sees it.
Varo: "A sudden release hits that crossing first."
Page 5
1. Inside the ridge office, Varo spreads the capture ledger. Ilen arrives with her square glasses, coiled bun and pale jacket.
Ilen: "I held the carts. What did you find?"
2. Neri places the map of omitted homes beside columns of jar symbols in the capture ledger.
Neri: "Full jars here. Empty beds there."
3. Eda sets down the spent mill report, her finger planted firmly on it.
Eda: "Two days of flour. No wind left. No water."
4. Ilen reads the returned reports with her hand lowered over the failed upper lift route on the map.
Ilen: "Our lift stopped taking their reports."
Page 6
1. Ilen looks directly at Eda across the office table; Neri lets the two women speak.
Ilen: "That failure belongs in our ledger."
2. Eda points to sealed spiral wind jars on a shelf and a single droplet-marked rain jar in a padded crate.
Eda: "Can those save the beds?"
3. Ilen rests a hand beside the spiral jars, not opening them.
Ilen: "Wind is pressure. The plants need water."
4. Neri draws three simple pictures on a fresh ledger page: a medical bowl, mill wheel, and ridge frame.
Neri: "Then we need all three claims together."
Page 7
1. Outside again, a dark natural cloud front builds beyond distant karst peaks; the valley below is still dry.
Varo: "That front reaches us by nightfall."
2. Varo watches workers beside the worn main gear and separate bypass wheel.
Varo: "We can open safely. We cannot rush it."
3. Neri places her hand on the closed ledger, facing Varo rather than the controls.
Neri: "Let us test a small opening first."
4. Varo looks toward the lower crossing; Eda stands ready to go down.
Varo: "With someone below to answer."
Page 8
1. Eda traces the safe stone path on the map while Neri watches.
Eda: "I will take the lower route."
2. Ilen brings the padded crate with one sealed droplet-marked rain jar to the table.
Ilen: "I can release this much rain."
3. Varo holds the control key in his palm, addressing Neri sternly.
Varo: "No opening before her signal."
4. Neri meets Eda's eyes across the jar crate; the ridge shutters remain closed behind them.
Neri: "I will wait."
