Transcript

Page 1

1. On the safe stone route, Neri steadies a new timber handrail while the headcloth carpenter drives a peg. The broken crossing remains in the distance.

Carpenter: "A handrail today. Beams after the storm."

2. Eda tests the pegged rail with her broad hand, looking at the long detour.

Eda: "The longer route stays open."

3. Two runners in plain work clothes stand at successive bends, clearly visible to each other.

Ilen: "A runner at every hidden turn."

4. Neri shoulders her plain signal flag and looks towards an exposed stone observation platform.

Neri: "No guessing through the rocks."

Page 2

1. Varo demonstrates a single plain signal flag held vertically upright while Ilen and Neri watch from below.

Varo: "Upright means ready."

2. Eda holds one plain flag pole horizontally across her chest on the lower landing.

Eda: "Across means stop."

3. Neri steps behind a screen of rock and her flag disappears from the others' sight.

Neri: "And if you cannot see me?"

4. Varo rests his hand away from the stationary vertical bypass wheel.

Varo: "We stop. Until we know."

Page 3

1. At the infirmary the cropped-bob keeper uncaps the allocated droplet-marked rain jar above a covered washing basin. A small local shower falls only into the basin.

Keeper: "Washing water received."

2. At surviving seed beds Eda opens the second droplet-marked jar over one short planted row. A modest local mist wets the soil, while other rows stay dry.

Eda: "This row. The next one must wait."

3. Ilen marks two spent-jar symbols in the ledger beside two empty delivery cradles.

Ilen: "Two opened. Nothing left inside."

4. Varo checks the single remaining sealed reserve rain jar on a shelf, away from all controls.

Varo: "One held back. Still sealed."

Page 4

1. Neri reaches the exposed stone observation point, using the new handrail; Eda is visible much farther below.

Neri: "I can see the lower flag."

2. Varo stands at the vertical wooden bypass wheel on the ridge, facing a clear sightline towards Neri's distant post.

Varo: "And I can see yours."

3. Ilen shows Neri the return-report route on the ridge map.

Ilen: "Reports return this way."

4. Neri plants her feet on the exposed platform with only her signal flag in hand, no key or lever.

Neri: "Then this is my place."

Page 5

1. Eda lifts her flag upright from the cleared lower landing. Nobody stands on the broken crossing.

Eda: "Lower point ready."

2. Neri sees Eda's upright flag and raises her own flag upright towards Varo.

Neri: "Lower point ready. Passing it on."

3. Varo opens the vertical bypass wheel by exactly one marked notch; the main gear and collector branch stay still.

Varo: "One notch only."

4. Ilen watches the small opening while a runner starts a sand timer on the table.

Ilen: "Two dips when the air arrives."

Page 6

1. At the exposed point Neri feels a small breeze on her scarf. Far below Eda's flag has not answered yet.

Neri: "Here first. Not there yet."

2. Neri keeps watching instead of signalling a further opening; her flag stays steady.

Neri: "I am waiting."

3. A gentle breeze reaches the lower landing. Eda deliberately dips her flag twice to acknowledge its arrival. The temporary rail stays steady.

Eda: "Air received. The rail is holding."

4. Ilen records the report beside the sand timer while Neri relays the two deliberate flag dips from her visible station outside.

Ilen: "Twelve counts between the two points."

Page 7

1. With the test notch closed, Varo sits beside Ilen as she records its timing.

Varo: "That is a measure, not permission."

2. Ilen points to the live chain of flags visible down the valley.

Ilen: "Every step still waits for an answer."

3. Neri holds her flag horizontally across her chest as low cloud briefly hides Eda's post.

Neri: "Lower point lost. Stop."

4. Varo keeps the bypass closed and both hands off the wheel.

Varo: "Stopped."

Page 8

1. The cloud thins enough to reveal Eda standing securely at the lower post, flag held across her chest.

Eda: "Still here. Still waiting."

2. Neri relays Eda's horizontal stop signal, remaining calm at the exposed point.

Neri: "I have your answer."

3. Varo and Ilen look at the dark natural front nearing the ridge. Empty collector vessels remain isolated behind a closed branch shutter.

Varo: "The front is nearly on us."

4. Neri braces at her stone station with the horizontal flag against her chest; the newly connected flag posts descend into the valley.

Neri: "Then we keep the chain."
