The New Floor

The Houses We Carry, episode 12. 15 vertical sequences, 60 panels.

Sequence 1: The room in daylight to come

Anja indicates the proposed bed and table positions in the empty upper room. Edda stretches a measuring tape while Mara records the measurements. Tamsin observes as Anja checks the doorway. Mara draws a room plan with a clear route out.

Anja: "A bed here. The table by the window."

Anja: "And a way out with both in place."

Mara: "That goes on the plan too."

Sequence 2: What comes aboard

Anja places her cream bag, floral sewing case, folded clothes and framed house photograph on the table. Edda shows the spare bed frame and striped mattress waiting outside. Mara adds Anja, her belongings, the bed and mattress to the revised household list. Anja keeps her own house drawing off that list.

Anja: "This is what I have with me."

Edda: "The spare bed is mine to lend."

Mara: "We count the person and everything we bring."

Anja: "The house stays off this list."

Sequence 3: No secret allowance

Tamsin explains the remaining allowance at the common table with Mara and Anja. The current network is shown as five linked foundation symbols. Mara compares the proposed room arrangement with the distribution record. Anja questions whether the previous pass still applies; Tamsin opens the new check record.

Tamsin: "Removing weight made an allowance. Not a blank cheque."

Mara: "The new load changes where the weight sits."

Anja: "So the old pass is not enough."

Tamsin: "Correct."

Sequence 4: The five on the bench

Mara, Tamsin and Ivo observe the isolated five-caisson model basin. Mara indicates the part representing the new room on a distribution sketch. The five small white caissons hold a steady load. Tamsin records the result and prepares the next checks.

Mara: "The room is represented here."

Tamsin: "Now the movement checks."

Sequence 5: A result with limits

The five-caisson model is checked under movement and a changed loading state. Mara, Ivo and Tamsin watch it settle. Tamsin places the checked conditions beside the revised distribution. Mara indicates the declared five-foundation list.

Tamsin: "This arrangement passes the tested conditions."

Mara: "No additions without another check."

Sequence 6: Terms at the table

Anja asks about the room costs at the kitchen table with Mara, Edda and Oren. Mara presents the household agreement. Anja touches her sewing case as she asks about paid work. Edda keeps that separate from the room key. The old kiln hearth remains empty.

Anja: "What does the room cost?"

Mara: "A share we can agree. No work owed for being here."

Anja: "I want paid work, when there is work."

Edda: "Then we keep that separate from the key."

Sequence 7: The offer to sell

Mara takes the folded PRIVATE SALE OFFER from her notebook and places it beside the new household agreement. Anja listens, keeping her hands clear of the papers. Mara studies the offer after Anja reminds her that she can refuse.

Mara: "This sale required the house to be empty and separate."

Anja: "You can still say no."

Mara: "I know."

Sequence 8: A decision in writing

Mara marks the private-sale offer DECLINED and puts it in her own folder. Anja stands by the doorway with her cream bag and asks how long Mara will stay. Mara closes the folder without promising a permanent stay.

Mara: "I am declining this offer."

Anja: "For how long are you staying?"

Mara: "I have not decided that yet."

Sequence 9: Every household answers

Anja, Mara, Edda and Oren sit at the common table; Tamsin and Ivo stand behind. Oren checks his foundation agreement. Tamsin presents the revised declared load. The adults record their agreement, and Anja adds her own consent.

Oren: "My foundation agreement still stands?"

Tamsin: "With this declared change, if you agree."

Anja: "I agree to my part."

Sequence 10: The new floor

Ivo and Mara carry the small wooden bed up the stairs while Edda brings folded bedding. Anja directs the bed into the measured position. Mara and Anja move the table to the window. Tamsin compares the finished arrangement with the revised room plan.

Anja: "A little towards this wall."

Tamsin: "The room matches the revised plan."

Sequence 11: A message to the shelter

Ivo calls the upper-bank shelter from the kitchen telephone, with separate foundation and valve repair records on the table. Neri listens beside the two narrow iron beds. Ivo opens both records while speaking. Neri agrees to read them on returning.

Ivo: "The repairs and return checks are complete."

Neri: "Both records?"

Ivo: "Both. You can read them here."

Neri: "I will."

Sequence 12: Coming back is not forgetting

Neri returns along the guarded walkway with binoculars and their bird notebook. Ivo waits at the kitchen door. At the table, he presents a valve record and a separate foundation record. Neri reads them. They sit together with space between their chairs.

Ivo: "I should have told you sooner."

Neri: "Yes."

Sequence 13: A useful place to watch

Neri watches birds on high pilings from a protected upper window and records their movement off the lower ledges. Mara listens from inside and looks towards the harbour watch. Neri continues watching safely through the window.

Neri: "They have moved off the lower ledges."

Mara: "I will pass it to the watch."

Neri: "I can keep looking from here."

Sequence 14: Ready does not mean finished

Tamsin posts the revised household list beside the REVISED LIFT WINDOW notice. Mara, Ivo and Oren check the adult watch roster. Harbour crew inspect the installed stabiliser at the bank. Mara observes the five supported white caissons from the protected rail.

Mechanic: "The declared arrangement is approved for the lift."

Mara: "The watch continues until it is over."

Sequence 15: A name inside

Anja arranges her house photograph and sewing kit at the upper-room table. A modest wooden bed stands in its measured place. Mara offers the room key from the open doorway. Anja takes it and looks around her new room. Her separate house drawing remains rolled; blue low-water night lies beyond the window.

Mara: "Your copy of the terms is on the table."

Anja: "And my name is on the household page."
