In the memory, Halmeoni rests a hand beside her cup. A second, untouched cup stands across the table. The written passage is presented in a curved tailless English document-reading bubble.
Halmeoni's written letter: Some nights I only said, 'I'm here.'
Panel 6.
Back in the present, Haneul holds the open letter and turns towards Bit.
Haneul: I thought the lanterns kept it away.
Panel 7.
Bit sits on the table beside the letter, listening, his cream tail curled behind him.
Bit: They gave her time. She used it to listen.
Panel 8.
The closing passage of Halmeoni's letter ends with her signature. The written passage is presented in a curved tailless English document-reading bubble. The physical letter is handwritten in Korean: 내 마지막 소원은 단순했단다. 나를 이어 누군가 산에 귀 기울여 주는 것. 할머니
Halmeoni's written letter: My last wish was simple: that someone would listen to the mountain after me. Halmeoni
Panel 9.

Haneul: It went dark because no one was listening.
Panel 10.
Haneul sits on the veranda with her hands resting on her thighs and her boots on the wooden floor. Bit looks up at her.
Haneul: I can't promise I won't be frightened.
Panel 11.

Haneul: But I can start by staying.
