Morning arrives without birdsong or bells. Bit names the silence, and Haneul meets Min-ji at the village shop.

The Twelfth Lantern - Episode 2: The Hush
Panel 1. Cold autumn morning outside the tea house. Two birds perch on a branch; one opens its beak. Beyond the lattice window, Haneul listens. No birdsong is heard.
Panel 2. A small bronze temple wind bell hangs beneath the eaves. Its fish-shaped metal wind plate moves, pulling the clapper towards the rim. No ringing is heard.
Panel 3. Haneul kneels beside the tea-house window. Bit sits on the floor near the low table.
Haneul: Why can't I hear the birds?
Bit: The Hush.
Panel 4. Bit looks towards Haneul; her relaxed hand rests beside the table.
Bit: It feeds on what people leave unsaid.
Panel 5. Haneul and Bit face each other in the morning light.
Haneul: And the lanterns?
Bit: Each holds a sincere wish.
Bit: When its holder keeps the truth inside, it dims.
Panel 6. Haneul leans forward to listen. Bit holds her gaze.
Haneul: So I ask what's wrong?
Bit: Ask. Then leave room for the answer.
Panel 7. Haneul sits at the threshold and adjusts her trouser cuff above her boots. Bit and the closed suitcase remain inside.
Haneul: First, breakfast.
Bit: Try Min-ji at the shop. The second lantern is hers.
Panel 8. At the village shop, Haneul stands on the customer side of the counter. Min-ji, a ponytailed schoolgirl in a navy jacket, stands behind it with a paper bag.
Min-ji: Morning.
Haneul: I'm Haneul.
Panel 9. Min-ji gives a small polite smile. Haneul selects a paper-wrapped breakfast parcel.
Min-ji: Min-ji. My mum runs the shop.
Haneul: Then you're the person I need.
Panel 10. Min-ji's hand hesitates above the paper bag. Her smile falls away. Haneul speaks from off-panel left.
Haneul: Is it always this quiet?
Min-ji: No.
Panel 11. Cut back to the tea house. Exactly twelve lanterns hang in one row beneath the front eaves. The second from the left gutters; the other eleven, including the twelfth, stay lit.
Panel 12. A closer view of the first three lanterns. The second is now dark. Its neighbours still glow.
End of Episode 2.
