As Haneul packs to leave, Bit tells her how Halmeoni's first wish brought him into the world. A memory of welcome gives way to a fear he has never voiced, and a second letter waits in the tea house.

The Twelfth Lantern
Episode 8: Where Bit Came From
Content notice: loneliness, fear of loss and gentle supernatural themes.
Panel 1. Haneul folds clothes beside her open olive suitcase while Bit watches from the tea table.
Bit: Going somewhere?
Haneul: I'm only putting things away.
Panel 2. Bit's expression softens as Haneul asks whether he means Halmeoni.
Bit: She used to say that, too.
Haneul: Halmeoni?
Panel 3. Bit sits in warm lamplight and reveals that he was Halmeoni's first wish.
Bit: I was her first wish.
Panel 4. Haneul looks towards Bit and asks what Halmeoni wished for.
Haneul: What did she wish for?
Panel 5. Sixty years earlier, young Yoon Seon-ja sits alone holding one teacup and wishes for company.
Narration: Sixty years earlier.
Yoon Seon-ja: I wish I wouldn't be alone.
Panel 6. Silent panel. Bit appears on the tea table beside the single cup.
Panel 7. Young Seon-ja leans towards the small fox in surprise; Bit answers with confidence.
Yoon Seon-ja: A fox?
Bit: Obviously.
Panel 8. Seon-ja smiles at Bit and rests a welcoming hand beside him on the table.
Yoon Seon-ja: You can stay.
Panel 9. Seon-ja and Bit share the table. Two cups now stand together.
Bit (recollection): She made room for me. Every night.
Panel 10. Back in the present, Haneul and Bit exchange a little dry humour across the tea table.
Haneul: Sixty years, and you're still on the table.
Bit: I have seniority.
Panel 11. Bit lowers his ears and admits his fear that nothing of him will remain if the lanterns go out.
Bit: If the lanterns go out...
Bit: What if there's nothing left of me?
Panel 12. Haneul leans to Bit's eye level; he admits that he did not want her to stay out of pity.
Haneul: You could have told me.
Bit: I didn't want you to stay out of pity.
Panel 13. Silent panel. Haneul opens a service-cabinet drawer and finds a closed cream envelope beside a folded cloth and spare cup.
Panel 14. Haneul holds the newly found sealed envelope. An older opened envelope and page lie separately on the table.
Narration: A second letter.
End of Episode 8.
