The Twelfth Lantern
Season 2, Episode 3: The Women Who Dive
Series episode 15
Content note: supernatural memory loss and emotional distress.
Panel 1. The following morning, Go and Haneul meet Hong Eun-suk and two colleagues at the modern Jeju haenyeo changing room. Bit stays on the dry path. The dark lantern and small flat brass charm rest on a bench. The sign reads 해녀 탈의장 (haenyeo taruijang, Haenyeo changing room).
Caption: The next morning.
Panel 2. Eun-suk checks the attached teal gathering net and smooths a folded wetsuit on the workbench beside an orange tewak float.
Eun-suk: We used to sing while we mended these.
Panel 3. Go asks Eun-suk about the missing song, beside the changing room and preserved stone bulteok shelter.
Go: Which song?
Eun-suk: That's what we keep asking.
Panel 4. An experienced haenyeo rests her arms on an orange tewak after resurfacing. Her face is above water; the gathering net remains attached separately. Silent panel.
Panel 5. Haneul listens from the dry shore, beside Go.
Haneul: That sound is still there.
Go: Breathing is not the song we lost.
Panel 6. Eun-suk sits on a wooden bench with a towel in her hands. Haneul sits beside her and asks gently.
Haneul: What comes before the tune?
Panel 7. Eun-suk looks towards the orange float, recalling an ordinary moment with a faint smile.
Eun-suk: Cold fingers. Someone laughing at my singing.
Panel 8. Go gently turns her unlit lantern while its base remains supported on a wooden work surface. Its tiny flat brass charm lies beside it, unmarked back visible. Haneul and Eun-suk sit nearby; Bit shelters by the basalt wall. Silent panel.
Panel 9. Eun-suk's adult daughter Seo-yeon arrives in a rust padded jacket, holding a stainless flask.
Seo-yeon: Mum? I brought the warm one.
Panel 10. Eun-suk looks up at Seo-yeon with uncertain recognition. Seo-yeon holds the flask without forcing a handover.
Eun-suk: You always remember.
Panel 11. Seo-yeon kneels beside her seated mother and looks up at her. Haneul steps back to give them room. The flask stands on the bench.
Seo-yeon: What is it?
Panel 12. Eun-suk searches her daughter's face with frightened recognition. Her loss of a name follows the established supernatural disturbance; no medical diagnosis is made.
Eun-suk: I know you. Why can't I find your name?
