Episode summary

In a snowbound village, Haneul and Go find a closed door. They choose to wait without demanding an answer, until Hye-rin notices the red scarf.

A small village bus drives away along an ordinary residential lane. Old snow lies beside the drainage channel and on stone walls and roofs; houses, utility poles and distant mountains establish the village. The printed label on the bus reads 마을버스. Its separate tailless English reading bubble gives: Village bus. Haneul and Go walk along the cleared lane. Haneul wears her teal coat over the inherited grey jacket, with her red scarf. Go carries her gold travelling lantern in her right hand and her brown bag on her left shoulder. Bit walks on a dry patch beside them.
Snow slips from the tiled roof beneath bare branches, breaking into falling pieces without its expected soft sound. Physical movement continues. Silent panel. Go knocks once on Hye-rin's closed wooden sliding door. Haneul waits a step behind. Go has set the travelling lantern upright on the dry stone ledge to the right of the doorway before raising her hand.
Inside the house, Hye-rin's relaxed hand and plum cardigan cuff rest on a timber chest beside its closed drawer. Her face stays out of view, and the outer door remains shut. She speaks from outside the frame. Haneul glances towards Go and lowers her hand below her chest instead of knocking again. The red scarf lies against her teal coat; the sliding door behind her stays closed.
Haneul and Go sit on a low dry stone wall several steps away from the still-closed door, leaving the approach clear. Bit sits between them. Go has retrieved her travelling lantern and placed it upright at the far end of the wall. Her food parcel remains wrapped on her lap. A sage-green thermos and a cream cup with a dark green lid stand on the wall, ready for use. Silent panel. Go unwraps a small rice-cake parcel on her lap. Bit watches the food from the wall beside her. Her gold lantern stands at the other end of the wall.
Haneul pours a warm drink from the sage-green thermos into the cream cup, whose base rests on the dry stone wall. The dark green lid lies beside the cup, ready to be fitted before the offer at the doorway. Silent panel. Haneul leaves the cream lidded cup on the dry outer stone ledge and withdraws her hand. The cup rests clear of the sliding door track; the door is still closed.
Haneul and Go turn away from the door in a medium rear view. Go carries her lantern in her right hand and her bag on her left shoulder. Haneul's red scarf lifts in a small gust. Bit follows below the crop; the cup remains on the ledge. The sliding door opens a little. One of Hye-rin's eyes and part of her lined face appear in the narrow opening. The cup remains untouched on the ledge. Silent panel.
Haneul has stopped and turned towards Hye-rin. Her red scarf is prominent in the foreground. Hye-rin looks towards it from the narrow doorway; the cup remains untouched on the ledge.
