Panel 1
Haneul returns to the tea-house doorway in her teal coat. Mi-rae looks up from beside the low tea table, while Bit watches Haneul from his round woven mat.
Mi-rae: What did he say?
Panel 2
Haneul faces seated Mi-rae and gives the deadline, her hands resting at her sides.
Haneul: Until the winter solstice.
Panel 3
Bit tilts his head towards the women beyond the frame. He sits on his woven mat, his single tail curled beside him.
Bit: I preferred lunch.
Panel 4
Mi-rae stands by the rear passage and holds out an open hand towards Haneul. Bit has risen and stands beside his mat.
Mi-rae: Come with me.
Panel 5
Mi-rae waits beside a closed timber door in the service passage. Haneul looks towards her, one hand near her scarf, while Bit sits by her boots.
Haneul: There's a cellar?
Panel 6
The full-height wall door is open, revealing a dim stone interior beyond its low threshold. Mi-rae stands beside the doorway; Haneul looks down towards the entrance, with Bit seated beside her.
Mi-rae: Mind the step.
Panel 7
Mi-rae leads down the stone stair with one hand on the wooden rail. Haneul follows, with Bit coming down behind her. The open door above leads back into the tea house.
(Silent.)
Panel 8
Mi-rae and Haneul stand in the stone cellar with their hands lowered, looking towards a faint warm light beyond the left edge. Bit stands by Haneul's boots and looks the same way. A corner of a low stone plinth is visible at left; the stair rises to the indoor passage behind them at right.
(Silent.)
Panel 9
An old rectangular paper lantern stands on a low stone plinth. Its wooden frame surrounds pale paper with a small repair patch, and a weak amber light glows within.
(Silent.)
Panel 10
Mi-rae stands beside Haneul, looking towards the old lantern on the plinth. Both keep their hands at their sides.
Mi-rae: Your grandmother's first lantern. The oldest of them.
Panel 11
Haneul looks down towards the weak lantern light. Mi-rae watches beside her; neither touches the lantern.
Haneul: It's hardly glowing.
Panel 12
Bit stands on all four paws and looks up at the weak lantern. Mi-rae and Haneul wait behind him, their hands lowered.
(Silent.)
Panel 13
Bit lifts one forepaw and takes a small step towards the lantern. Its light remains weak.
(Silent.)
Panel 14
Bit stands beside the plinth on all four paws. The lantern shines more brightly, spreading a wider pool of gold across the stone floor as Mi-rae and Haneul watch.
(Silent.)
